Dan Spitale is an American former competitive powerlifter and author. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, he competed in national and international powerlifting competitions sanctioned by organizations including the American Powerlifting Federation (APF), World Powerlifting Congress (WPC) and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). He was inducted into the Hammond Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. [1]
Early life
Spitale was raised in Hammond, Indiana and became involved in strength training and competitive athletics during his youth.
Powerlifting career
Spitale competed in junior and open powerlifting divisions across multiple national and international federations during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
In 1997, coverage by The Times of Northwest Indiana documented Spitale's national and world titles at the AAU Nationals, AAPF Junior Nationals, and WDFPF World Championships. [2][3][4]
In 1998, Spitale won titles at the AAPF & AAU Open Nationals and later won the AWPC World Championships. During that period, he also appeared in competition coverage published by Powerlifting USA. [5][6][7]
In 2000, Spitale won the AAPF National Championships & AWPC World Championships in the 198 lb class and recorded a world - record 320 kg (705.4 lb) squat. [8]
That same year, The Times of Northwest Indiana reported on Spitale's achievement of a 705 lb squat milestone during competition. [9]
Coverage by The Times of Northwest Indiana also documented Spitale's titles in AWPC World Championships competition and national-level NASA competition during the early 2000s.[10][11]
According to the Hammond Sports Hall of Fame, Spitale was a six-time national champion and two-time world champion in powerlifting. [12]
Competition records archived by OpenPowerlifting list Spitale's best equipped lifts as a 705.4 lb. squat, 380.3 lb. bench press, 556.6 lb deadlift, and a 1,636.9 lb total. [13]
In 2008, The Times of Northwest Indiana revisited Spitale's competitive powerlifting career as part of its "Where Are They Now?" retrospective series.[14]
In 2016, Spitale was inducted into the Hammond Sports Hall of Fame for accomplishments in competitive powerlifting. [15]
Business career
Following his competitive athletic career, Spitale worked in logistics, supply chain, insurance, and financial services.
He later held management roles related to logistics and risk management services with UPS.
Writing and media
Spitale is the author of C.O.A.C.H.: Raising the Floor, a book focused on leadership and organizational culture.
He has appeared on podcasts and media programs related to logistics, supply chain, and leadership.
