Confederate Speedway (also known as Confederate Motor Speedway) was a motorsports quarter-mile dirt track facility located south of Woodruff, South Carolina. It was built in 1950, and only operated for about five years when it was left abandoned. The track was revived in 1970, when it was changed to a three-fifths mile oval. Stock car races were held on the track, until it was once again left abandoned in 1989, when a local zoning committee shut it down.[1] Multiple tries of revival have been made unsuccessfully.[2][3]
History
According to local papers, throughout the years of operation the track was hated by the people living nearby. It was common for locals to complain about the red dust everywhere, that had flown off the track during races.[1][4] In 1981, the track was involved Huckaby v. Confederate Motor Speedway, a South Carolina Supreme Court case upholding the enforceability of liability waivers for race participants.[5]
Today
The site today can be seen on satellite images. On the site used to grow trees and grass, some affected by the calcium-treated surface,[2] but an unknown party cleared the site in 2022 for unknown reasons and now it can be seen better and clearer on satellite images than before.[6][7]In the early 2000's, a building on the site can be seen somewhat intact in photographs, but later on it was demolished.[7] Today, some light poles and the grandstand still exist, and the track itself is mostly travelable.[1]
