Military career

Cerny served nine years in Combat Search and Rescue in the United States Air Force Special Operations. He was assigned to the 56th Rescue Squadron at RAF Lakenheath, England, and the 320th Special Tactics Squadron.[1]

In December 2011, while training with the Alaska Air National Guard's 212th Rescue Squadron at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, then-Senior Airman Cerny responded to a real-world rescue alert. A utility worker had fallen down a steep slope and sustained chest and rib injuries. Cerny rappelled 50 feet near active power lines from an HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter to provide medical treatment, stabilize the patient, and coordinate the hoist recovery. The patient was successfully transferred to a nearby emergency room.[4]

He also served at Daegu Air Base, Republic of Korea, with the 320th Special Tactics Squadron, where he participated in mass casualty exercises with the 353rd Special Operations Group.[5]

As a Pararescue Helicopter Team Leader, Cerny served as a technical rescue and medical instructor, advising military personnel from seven countries. In 2014, he was awarded Pararescueman of the Year for the 48th Operations Group.[1]
