"Chapter Two: The Mall Rats" is the second episode of the third season of the American science fiction horror drama television series Stranger Things. Written and directed by series creators Matt and Ross Duffer, it was originally released on Netflix in the United States on July 4, 2019, along with the rest of the third season.

Development
"The Mall Rats" was written and directed by series creators the Duffer Brothers.[1]
When Eleven leaves Mike, she states, "I dump your ass"; Brown later stated that this was her favorite line from the third season.[2] Similarly, Sink claimed that, upon reading the script, she knew the line would become "iconic".[3] Despite this, Brown did not like Mike and Eleven being broken up, especially since she was sure they would stay together after reading every scene with them before the breakup. Although she didn't tell the writers that she disliked the decision, Brown was still upset about it, hoping they would make up in one of the next episodes.[4]
Filming

The mall montage went through many revisions before the final version was picked, with there being multiple different plans for what Eleven and Max would do during it. They ultimately allowed Brown and Sink to decide what they wanted to do, and filming lasted two days. Scenes that were cut include Eleven and Max getting their ears pierced, and them having a "feast" at the food court. Sink had never gotten her ears pierced before, and the idea of her actually getting piercings on camera was discussed, but they didn't have enough time to film it. Brown and Sink were given instructions not to touch the Nikes on display for the shoe store scene, since they were vintage from the 1980s and were only being loaned for filming.[5]
