Chanpan is an Asian-American band based in New York City. The band is formed by three members: Grace Dumdaw and twin brothers Lance and Matthew Tran.[1][2]
The band was formed in 2022 after they decided to busk in Chinatown for fun.[1][2]
History
Name
"Chanpan" is a combination of the Chinese pronunciation of Lance and Matthew's surname, 陳, and part of Dumdaw’s Kachin name, Seng Hkam Pan.[1]
Background
All members of the band came from immigrant working class families. The Tran twins are originally from Missouri, while Dumdaw is from Louisiana. Dumdaw first met Lance Tran in Philadelphia in 2018, as they both were there for internships.[2] A few years later, Dumdaw and the Tran brothers moved to New York City at the same time, in which Dumdaw suggested busking around the city, to which the Tran brothers agreed, starting October 2022.[2] Chanpan came to be due to mutual experiences, such as working in their family’s restaurants, and their passion in community organizing.[1]
