Caroline "Caddie" Emily Fox Howard (March 10, 1829 – October 15, 1908) was an American actress. She played the role of Topsy in blackface in George Aiken's stage adaptation of Uncle Tom's Cabin over 5000 times from 1852 to 1886.[1]
Early life and education
Caroline Emily Fox was born on March 10, 1829 in Boston. She was the daughter of George Howe Fox, property master of the Federal Street Theatre and later stage carpenter at the Tremont Theatre, and actress Emily Wyatt Fox. She and four of her siblings, George Washington Lafayette Fox, Charles Kemble Fox, James Augustus Fox, and Henry Nelson Fox, all became stage actors. Caroline Fox made her stage debut in 1833 as Annette in August von Kotzebue's The Stranger. She appeared as the daughter of Charles Mathews character in The May Queen in 1834. In 1843, she joined the Boston Museum Company, where she met actor George C. Howard. They married the next year and would have eight children, including actress Cordelia Howard.
