Draft:Brno Dragon

The Brno Dragon hanging in the Old Town Hall

The Brno Dragon is a taxidermy crocodile hanging from the ceiling in the underpass of the Old Town Hall in Brno, the Czech Republic. It being called a dragon likely originates from medieval peasants referring to it as such, as the majority of Europe has not been widely exposed to crocodiles yet.[1]

Due to being a popular target of vandalism[2], the dragon has been restored numerous times throughout history, most recently in 2012.[3]

Origin

The origin of the dragon is unclear. A common myth states that it was a gift from Emperor Matthias, but several contemporary documents state, that the dragon has already been in Brno in the 16th century.[4] Despite this, promotional materials of the Old Town Hall still list the Emperor Matthias myth as its origin.

Legacy

The Brno Dragon has become one of the primary symbols of Brno, with several sports clubs, competitions, Dopravní podnik města Brna (the company that manages public transport in Brno) and products being named after it or referencing it using the imagery of dragons. It has also appeared on numerous pieces of memorabilia sold in the city. A play based on the legend premiered in 2014[5]
