Brassel dialect (Schlasian: Brasselsche Mundoart, German: Breslauer Mundart, Breslauische Mundart, Silesian: Brasselski dialykt) is an almost extinct dialect of Silesian German.

Area of occurance

The dialect was used in the city now called Wroclaw. After the second world war, due to the deportation of Silesians and Germans from west of the Oder river, the dialect is mostly now used by displaced people, which causes this dialect to be in risk of extinction.

Language differences.

  • Instead of the common diminutive form "chen," the "l" was used. For example: Bänkchen – Bänkl, Brötchen – Brötl, Gärtchen – Gärtl, Stöckchen – Steckl, Würstchen – Würschtl
  • "E" was added to nouns, for example: Bank – Banke; Schrank – im Schranke
  • "ü" has been replaced by the letter "i", for example: Küche – Kiche
  • "rt" has been replaced by "tt", for example: Torte – Totte
  • In multi-syllable words, the accent usually fell onto the second syllable: Adalbertstraße, Tunnel – Tunell, Karussell – Karussel
