Intro
Boyds is a Philadelphia-based family business in the luxury retail industry. The company began in 1938 as a small haberdashery.[1]. Its two stores now carry Brunello Cucinelli, Christian Louboutin, Moncler, Tom Ford, Zegna and other high-end women’s and men’s brands. Kent Gushner is the current president and third generation owner [2].
History
Founded in 1938 by Russian immigrants Alexander, Albert and Ben Gushner, the original shop sold cigars, sundries, and eventually men’s shirts [3]. Gerald Gushner and his brother took ownership of the company in 1968 and subsequently expanded the business[4].
The store’s longtime Market Street location was redeveloped by the city to build a convention center in 1990, and since then, Boyds has been housed in a five-story building at 1818 Chestnut Street, near Rittenhouse Square. It was around that time when Boyds expanded beyond its core in menswear to women’s[5].
In 2004, Kent Gushner and his brothers-in-law purchased the store from his father and uncle. In 2020, the company opened a temporary store at Suburban Square in Ardmore, PA to test the suburban market[6]. In 2022, Boyds opened a store in Wayne, PA, marking its second permanent location [7]
