Boris Kapelnik ——————————————————————————————————————————————————— Boris Kapelnik is an American optometrist and football (soccer) player. Born in Kyiv, Ukraine, he immigrated to the United States as a teenager and has competed in organized football at the club and international level. He has represented the United States in international competition as a member of the Maccabi USA over-35 national football team. Alongside his athletic activities, Kapelnik practices optometry in New York City.
Early life and education
Kapelnik was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. He began playing football in a local youth academy known as Druzhba, which later became FC Athlete. At the age of 13, he immigrated to the United States and settled in Illinois.
He attended Glenbrook South High School, where he played for the school’s football team. During this period, he also competed for the Glenview Soccer Club. After graduating, Kapelnik enrolled at the University of Chicago. Although he did not compete at the varsity collegiate level, he continued playing in organized local leagues, including with a team known as the Ukrainian Lions.
Club career
After relocating to New York City, Kapelnik remained active in competitive amateur football. In 2015, he joined Manhattan Celtic, one of the largest amateur football organizations in the United States.
During his time with the club, Kapelnik competed across multiple divisions and age groups and played on more than 40 registered teams. He was part of Manhattan Celtic squads that won a league championship in 2020 and a state cup in 2021. He continues to compete in amateur football.
International competition
In 2015, Kapelnik earned selection to the Maccabi USA over-35 national football team. He represented the United States at the Pan American Maccabi Games held in Chile, where the team won a bronze medal.
He later competed again with the Maccabi USA over-35 team at the Pan American Maccabi Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the team earned a silver medal. Kapelnik is scheduled to represent the United States at the Maccabiah Games in 2026.
Professional career
Outside of football, Kapelnik is a licensed optometrist practicing in New York City. He earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry and later established his professional practice in the New York metropolitan area. His work focuses on comprehensive eye care, diagnostic testing, and ocular health management.
