Draft:Ben Medansky

Ben Medansky (born 1988) is an American artist, ceramicist, and designer based in Los Angeles, California. His work spans sculptural ceramics, functional design objects, and site-specific installations, and has been featured in major art and design publications including Wallpaper*, Architectural Digest, Sight Unseen, American Craft, and Format magazine.[1]

Early life and education

Ben Medansky was born in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1988. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010 and also studied at the Ox-Bow School of Art in Saugatuck, Michigan.

Career

Medansky began his career working in sculpture and functional ceramics before expanding the scale of his practice to include architectural-scale ceramic wall works and installations. His work is influenced by brutalist architecture, Dada principles of spontaneity and chance, and by the strong and diverse infrastructure and flora of the Los Angeles River.

Following the loss of his early studio to a fire in 2016, Medansky shifted his focus from smaller works – four of his architectural ceramic cups reside in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s permanent collection – to larger installations. His architectural-scale wall sculptures have been commissioned by private clients, interior designers including Kelly Wearstler, and fashion houses including Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and Chloé.[2]

Medansky has exhibited widely in Los Angeles and across the U.S. His solo and two-person exhibitions include Capsule Collection at Maison Truvaille Galerie, Los Angeles (2024), Ferns & Freeways presented by Bianca Chen, Los Angeles (2023), and Fired by the Fire at Lawson Fenning, Los Angeles (2016).[3]

He has been reviewed in The New York Times, Architectural Digest, LA Times, among others, and was named a “tastemaker” by the Wallpaper USA 400 in 2025.[1] He has also exhibited in LA Design Weekend and Design Miami.[4]

Medansky has been a visiting lecturer at The American Museum of Ceramic Art, California College of Art, and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has taught at Ox Bow School of Art and was an artist in residence at The Headlands Center for the Arts and Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts.[5]

Collaborations

Medansky has collaborated with designers, architects, and brands on functional objects and site-specific installations. His collaborations include projects with Herman Miller and Geiger showrooms, a limited-edition series with Kelly Wearstler presented at Bergdorf Goodman, and product designs for brands such as Areaware.[6]

Artistic style

Medansky's style is influenced by brutalist architecture, Dada principles of spontaneity and chance, and by the flora of the Los Angeles River nearby his Frogtown, Los Angeles studio. He shapes his pieces by intuitively smooshing, scraping, and folding the material. He often presses objects that hold sentimental significance to him into the surface of the wet clay.
