Overview
Bandoi Parab (also known as Bandna) is a major folk festival celebrated primarily by the Kharia tribe and other ethnic groups in the Chota Nagpur Plateau region, including Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha. It is a harvest festival dedicated to the expression of gratitude toward livestock and nature.
Significance
The festival takes place during the new moon (Amavasya) of the Hindu month of Kartika, coinciding with Diwali and Sohrai. For the Kharia, cattle are considered essential members of the family who help in the agricultural cycle. The festival marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the winter storage.
Rituals
The celebrations usually span several days and involve distinct traditional practices:
- Gote Puja: The priest (Pahan) performs rituals at the village outskirts to seek protection for the village cattle.
- Cattle Bathing: On the main day, bulls and cows are taken to the local pond, washed, and decorated with vermilion and rice flour paste (Chauk).
- Feeding: A special meal consisting of boiled pulses and rice is fed to the animals.
- Goi-Danda: In some Kharia sub-clans, a ritual involves the cattle being led through the village paths lined with traditional floral patterns.
Cultural Expression
The festival is characterized by the singing of Bandoi songs accompanied by traditional instruments like the Dhol, Nagada, and Madal. Kharia women decorate the walls of their homes with folk art depicting animals and geometric patterns, similar to Sohrai art.
