Baloo Living (founded in 2018) is an American wellness and home goods company based in New York City. The company designs and manufactures weighted blankets, bedding, and sleep accessories.[1][2][3]

History

Baloo Living was founded in 2018 by Elizabeth Grojean.[4] The concept for the brand originated during a sabbatical Elizabeth Grojean took in Bali, Indonesia, where she identified a market demand for weighted blankets made from natural, breathable textiles rather than synthetic materials.[5][6]

The company launched as a direct-to-consumer brand. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company saw a surge in demand as consumers sought sleep aids for pandemic related anxiety. In 2020, the brand reported a doubling of sales between April and June.[7]

Products and Materials

Baloo is notable for being one of the few brands to produce quilted weighted blankets made entirely from cotton, including the interior lining, unlike many competing products, which typically use polyester.[8][9] The company states that its weighted blankets use lead-free glass microbeads to provide weight distribution, while its linen products incorporate French flax. Its products are certified under the OEKO-TEX Standard 100. The absence of synthetic liners is frequently cited in consumer reviews as a feature that improves breathability, particularly among individuals who report sleeping hot.[10][11]

Baloo is recognized for its sustainability efforts, which include being carbon neutral and ocean positive company through its partnership with SeaTrees, an organization that restores mangrove and kelp forest ecosystems to sequester carbon.[12][13] It also has a partnership with Beyond Bedtime, formerly known as the Pajama Program, a non-profit that provides sleep essentials to children in unstable housing environments and poverty.[14][15]

Recognition

The brand's flagship products have been featured as a top pick by The New York Times' Wirecutter annually since 2020.[16] Wirecutter also published a dedicated feature evaluating the specific health and comfort benefits of the Baloo design compared to traditional synthetic options.[17] It has also received recognition from CNN[18] and Forbes.[19]
