In 2000, Humongous Entertainment announced a successor game to Backyard Football (entitled Backyard Football 2001), which was planned to be released later that year for the Game Boy Color and PlayStation along with successors to Backyard Baseball and Backyard Soccer.[2]

Around as the same time as the ports for both the GameCube and Game Boy Advance ports, a live action/animated hour-long TV special called NFL Backyard Basics: Football Tips from the Pros aired on CBS and Nickelodeon Games and Sports for Kids.[3] The special featured football players, Donovan McNabb, Tony Gonzalez, Terrell Davis, Marcellus Wiley, Martin Gramatica, and Bill Gramatica.[4]
