Atlanta Music Project

The Atlanta Music Project (AMP) is a nonprofit youth music education organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 2010 by bassoonist and educator Dantes Rameau and Al Meyers, the organization provides tuition‑free music instruction, ensemble training, and performance opportunities for students in under-resourced communities across the Atlanta metropolitan area.

The program is inspired by El Sistema, the Venezuelan youth orchestra model that uses ensemble‑based music education as a tool for youth development and social change. Student ensembles from the organization have performed nationally and internationally and have been featured in outlets including the Atlanta Journal‑Constitution, WABE, and Atlanta Magazine.

History

The Atlanta Music Project was founded in 2010 by musician and educator Dantes Rameau after he participated in the Sistema Fellows Program at the New England Conservatory, a program studying Venezuela’s El Sistema youth orchestra model and training musicians to lead youth music programs.

The first AMP program launched at the Gilbert House, a City of Atlanta recreation center in southwest Atlanta and provided after‑school orchestral instruction for elementary and middle school students. The organization expanded over the following decade, serving hundreds of students across multiple locations and adding private lessons, choral, and summer programs.

Programs

The Atlanta Music Project provides ensemble‑based music instruction through orchestra, band, and choir programs, as well as private lessons and public performances.

The organization also hosts the AMP Summer Series, an annual program in which professional musicians serve as guest artists and provide masterclasses and performances with students.

In addition to music education, the organization provides college and career counseling and scholarship opportunities for students. According to Georgia Trend, the program expanded over time to include broader youth‑development initiatives supporting students’ educational and professional goals.

Facilities

In 2019 the organization signed a long‑term lease for its first permanent headquarters, the Atlanta Music Project Center for Performance & Education, located in the Capitol View neighborhood of southwest Atlanta. The facility includes rehearsal spaces, administrative offices, and a performance hall for concerts and community events.

Performances and collaborations

Students from the Atlanta Music Project regularly perform in public concerts and collaborate with professional musicians. In 2018, several AMP students performed with rapper T.I. during a recording of NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert series in Washington, D.C.

Students have also participated in international performances and youth orchestras, including appearances in Mexico City with youth orchestra musicians from across the Americas under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel.

In 2024 the Atlanta Music Project Senior Youth Choir won the Youth Choir Open Category at the World Choir Games in Auckland, New Zealand.

Funding and recognition

The organization has received philanthropic support from foundations and individual donors supporting music education programs. In 2016 the Atlanta Music Project received a Bank of America Neighborhood Builders grant.

In 2020 the organization was named a finalist for the Lewis Prize for Music Accelerator Award and received a $50,000 grant.

In 2021 the organization received a philanthropic gift from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott as part of her multibillion‑dollar giving initiative supporting community organizations.

In 2023 the organization announced major philanthropic gifts totaling more than $4.6 million to support instruments, programming, and teaching‑artist development.

Impact

Participants in the Atlanta Music Project frequently continue their education in music and other fields after completing the program. Alumni have enrolled in colleges and conservatories including Berklee College of Music and other universities, sometimes supported by scholarships earned through their musical training. The program has been cited as an example of how intensive music education initiatives can support youth development and long‑term academic achievement.
