Assuria is a Surinamese financial services group active in insurance, banking, and investment management. The company is listed on the Suriname Stock Exchange and is one of the largest financial institutions in Suriname.[1][2]
Founded in 1991, Assuria has expanded from a domestic insurance provider into a regional financial group with operations in Suriname, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago.
History
Formation and early development
Assuria was established on 25 March 1991 through the merger of three Surinamese insurance companies: NEN, Enna, and De Nationale. The company’s origins can be traced back to 1889, when De Eerschte Nederlandsche was founded. This entity was later acquired by Enna, forming part of Assuria’s historical foundation.
Following its formation, Assuria consolidated its position in the Surinamese insurance market and gradually expanded into broader financial services.
Expansion into banking and investment
Assuria became a significant shareholder in De Surinaamsche Bank (DSB), the largest commercial bank in Suriname, holding up to 44% of shares. Regulatory restrictions prevented further expansion of this stake.[3]
In 2018, changes in DSB’s ownership structure—following a new share issuance—reduced Assuria’s stake to approximately 17.5%.[4]
International expansion
Assuria began its international expansion in 2012 with the establishment of Assuria Life Inc. in Guyana. In the same period, the company acquired majority stakes in Gulf Insurance Ltd. and MEGA Insurance Company in Trinidad and Tobago, which were subsequently rebranded as Assuria Life Ltd.[3]
These acquisitions marked the group’s transition from a national insurer into a regional financial services provider.
Infrastructure and institutional development
In 2011, the Suriname Stock Exchange relocated its operations to Assuria’s training facility in Paramaribo.
Previously headquartered on Grote Combéweg, Assuria consolidated its operations in the Assuria Hermitage High-Rise, which was officially inaugurated on 27 December 2019. The building brought together all divisions of the group under a single headquarters.[5]
Corporate social responsibility
In 2016, during its 25th anniversary, Assuria established the Assuria Community Fund to support social and community-based projects. In the same year, the company funded a corporate governance chair at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, reinforcing its commitment to education and institutional development.[3]
Leadership
Stephen Smit served as Chief Executive Officer from the company’s founding until 2017. He was succeeded by co-chief executives Armand Achaibersing and Mario Merhai.[6]
Operations
Assuria operates across multiple segments of the financial sector, including life insurance, general insurance, medical insurance, investment services, and real estate.
The group has diversified into both domestic and regional markets, with subsidiaries and affiliated companies in Suriname and the Caribbean.
