Annabelle Long (investor)

Annabelle Long (Chinese: 龙宇; pinyin: Lóng Yǔ) is a Chinese venture capitalist. She is the founding and managing partner of BAI Capital, a Beijing-based venture capital firm that grew out of Bertelsmann's Asia investment arm and focuses on investments in technology and internet startups across Asia.[1]

Long is a member of the boards of directors of Tapestry, Inc., NIO Inc., LexinFintech Holdings, and The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, and The Estée Lauder Companies.

In 2024, she ranked #99 the Forbes Midas List of the world’s top 100 venture capitalists.[2]

Education

Long received a bachelor's degree in electronic engineering from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in 1994.[3] She received an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2005.[4][3]

Career

Long began her career working as a television and radio host and producer in Sichuan, China. From 1994 to 1996, she was a producer and host for Chengdu People’s Radio, and from 1996 to 2003, she served as a producer and lead anchor for Sichuan Broadcasting Group.[5]

In 2005, after receiving her MBA, Long joined Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments through its Entrepreneurs Program and initially worked in New York.[6][7] Long returned to Beijing in 2007 after convincing the company to set up a venture capital fund focused on China’s emerging internet sector and letting her run it.[8]

In 2008, Long founded Bertelsmann Asia Investments, later renamed BAI Capital, and served concurrently as CEO of Bertelsmann Corporate Center China.[4]

In 2011, she was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.[7]

Under Long’s leadership, BAI invested in fast-growing Chinese consumer and technology companies during the country's internet boom. By 2018, Global Corporate Venturing reported that BAI had made more than 110 investments and that four portfolio companies had gone public in a single year.[6] BAI was also an early backer of mobility and sharing-economy firms such as Mobike and Hello Chuxing, as well as online platforms such as Danke Apartment and Mogujie.[4]

A 2019 profile in Fortune China described BAI as one of the better-known and more profitable funds in the Chinese venture capital scene and highlighted Long's influence on the firm’s investment strategy.[9]

BAI announced plans in 2024 to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Chinese startups over the next several years.[10]

Long was appointed to the board of directors of Tapestry, Inc. in January 2016.[5] She also serves as a member of the board of directors of China Distance Education Holdings Limited,[11] LexinFintech Holdings Ltd.,[12], NIO Inc.,[13] The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, and The Estée Lauder Companies.[14]

Long was named to the Forbes Asia Power Businesswomen list in 2020 and to Fortune China's Influential Investors list in 2019.[7]

Long was the first Chinese member of Stanford Graduate School of Business Advisory Council,[2] where she served from 2015 to 2021.[7]

Personal Life

Long is based in Beijing, China.[2][15] A 2016 feature in The Wall Street Journal highlighted her transformation of a Beijing apartment to accommodate three generations of her family.[15]
