Anna Bugayeva (Ukrainian: Анна Бугаєва) — contemporary Ukrainian writer. Her fiction frequently considers themes of personal loss and self‑awareness.

Early life and education

Anna Bugayeva was born in Kyiv, Ukraine. She received a master's degree diploma from Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman. She worked in the banking sector as head of documentary operations and trade finance. In 2015, following Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the acquisition of Bank of Cyprus Ukraine by Alfa-Bank Russia, she resigned and launched her own business in entertainment and real estate. She experienced the start of the war in Ukraine in Kyiv before evacuating to a small village in the Kyiv region. Later, she moved to London with her teenage son, where she continues her literary work..[1][2]

Literary career

"Once upon a time, when I disappeared" (2021)

Debut novel by Anna Bugayeva, published in 2021. This is a psychological drama with elements of detective fiction that explores the complexities of family relationships, loss, secrets of the past, and the power of inner recovery.[3]

"All Will Be Paris!" (2022)

Published in 2022, the novel was long-listed for the BBC Book of the Year-2022 award.[4][5][6] Set partly in Paris, it follows 36‑year‑old Vlada as she attempts to rebuild her life after a series of personal setbacks. The book is held in the main holdings of the National Library of Ukraine under the number ВА856273[7].[8][9][10]

"I Am Your Enemy" (2025)

The events unfold against the backdrop of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, which forms the key context for the plot.[11][12] In June 2025 the Radio Kultura has launched a radio series—an audio adaptation of the novel[13]. The book is held in the main holdings of the National Library of Ukraine under the number BA876022 [14].

Ihor Chornyi, Doctor of Philology and professor at Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs, discusses Anna Buhayeva’s novel I Am Your Enemy (2024) in his article “The Theme of Rape in Contemporary Ukrainian Literature,” presented at the VIII International Scientific Conference in Ternopil on 20 February 2026[15]. He interprets the sexual violence depicted in the novel not only as an individual crime but also as a manifestation of wartime brutality and occupation terror, and highlights the focus on women’s wartime experience and states of powerlessness. Chornyi adds that the protagonist retains her dignity and sense of identity, and that the author avoids aestheticizing violence, using the narrative’s “discomfort” to prompt empathy and moral reflection.
