Riveti Streets (1992), Rock Steeple (1993), and the planned The Shadow of the Poor (1993) are early Hungarian interactive gamebooks written by Mark Evans (Angus Dewer). Contemporary Hungarian fantasy and role-playing publications described these works as deterministic and structurally fixed gamebooks, differing from dice-based and game-master-led role-playing games that dominated the Hungarian scene in the early 1990s.[1][2]
Background
The books were published during the early post-socialist period in Hungary, when role-playing games and gamebooks were rapidly emerging but still heavily influenced by tabletop mechanics. The Riveti series followed a different design philosophy, emphasizing fixed narrative logic and predetermined branching structures instead of random number generation.
Critical reception and analysis
The Hungarian fantasy and role-playing magazine Bíborhold published multi-page articles in 1992 and 1993 discussing Riveti Streets and Rock Steeple in detail.[1][2] These articles analyzed the books' narrative construction, decision logic, and thematic tone.
