Andrew James (A.J.) Boyd (born 1978) is an American Catholic theologian and ecumenist. He currently directs the International Fellows Programme at the International Dialogue Centre - KAICIID, an intergovernmental organization based in Lisbon, Portugal.
Early Life and Education
Raised near Seattle (USA), Boyd studied theology and dialogue at the University of Notre Dame, The Catholic University of America, Seattle University, the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, and Tilburg University.[1]
Career
Boyd worked as a lay ecclesial minister and master catechist, for the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle in the early 2000s.
From 2009, he was a theologian studying and teaching in Rome, focused on ecumenism and interreligious dialogue. He worked as a lecturer and professor at various Roman institutions, including the Pontifical Beda College, Pontifical North American College, The Catholic University of America, Australian Catholic University, Assumption University, and Richmond University.
He has been a researcher or collaborator for several Vatican offices, including the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, Caritas Internationalis, the International Union of Superiors General, and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
He has been a Fellow or visiting scholar at several international institutions, including the John Paul II Center for Interreligious Dialogue, Tantur Ecumenical Institute, International Dialogue Centre - KAICIID, Cardiff University, and Aristotle University.[2][3]
In early 2024, Boyd accepted a position with KAICIID in Lisbon, leading their flagship International Fellows Programme.
Contributions
Boyd is an active contributor to the fields of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue as an international public speaker,[4] having offered lectures or trainings in multiple countries in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and the Middle East, and online at Quora, where he shares insights on Christian unity and interfaith understanding, with over 30 million readers.[5]
