Amit Kumar Das is an Australian non-resident Indian businessman and philanthropist and businessman from Mirdaul, Araria district, Bihar, who is the founder and current chairman of iSOFT Software. He is known for founding the Moti Babu Institute of Technology (MBIT), an engineering college in Bihar dedicated in memory of his late father, Moti Lal Das, and his work as a software entrepreneur.[1][2][3][4]

Das was recognised with the Bihar Asmita Samman in 2010, for 'his contributions to the state of Bihar in the field of education and philanthropy.'[2][5][6]

Early Life

Das was born in the Mithila region of Bihar, in the village of Mirdaul. He attended the Anugrah Narayan College, in Patna, completing his intermediate education in science.[3] Das moved to Delhi in 1998 seeking employment, where he learnt English.[7] Das also became a member of faculty at NIIT in his time in Delhi.[2][3]

Career

Das founded a software company, iSOFT Software Technologies, and developed the business management system ERSys.[3][5][8] At the time of foundation, Das could not afford laptops, and often carried around his CPUs in buses to display to his software clients.[2][7] iSOFT currently holds offices in India, Australia and Singapore.[1][9]

Philanthropy

Das is also engaged with the Bihar Foundation, a foundation dedicated to the interests of Biharis outside of the state, serving as its secretary and president for the Sydney chapter.[2][10]

Das began the construction of MBIT in 2013 under the Matribhumi project, seeking to improve his home state through the fields of education, technology and engineering.[1][2][4][11] The college is dedicated to his father, Moti Lal Das. In 2015, he pledged US$1m in scholarships for MBIT undergraduates to study abroad.[4][12][8][13] He currently serves as the chairman of MBIT, located in Forbesganj, Bihar, India.[14]
