Ambientologist is an independent record label based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Founded in 2019, the label focuses on ambient, contemporary classical, and experimental music. Its releases have included works by a range of international artists and have been covered by music publications such as Headphone Commute, Ambientblog, Gonzo Circus, and Stationary Travels.[1][2][3][4]
History
Ambientologist began releasing music in 2019, with early coverage noting the label’s focus on the psychological and experiential dimensions of ambient music.[5] In 2020, Ambientologist launched its ongoing Sustain Series, a set of charity-focused ambient compilations that allowed artists to form collaborations by 'recycling' unfinished works of others.[6][7][8]
In addition to its individual releases, the label initiated a collaboration with Echoes Blue Music under the name Ambient Echoes, a joint project for releasing vocal-infused ambient music.[9]
Sustain Series
The label's Sustain Series is an ongoing compilation album series, seeing artists contribute mostly unfinished works and allowing others to finish, remix, and reinterpret them. Proceeds from each album are donated to a different conservation organisation.[10] The first volume, released in 2020, featured contributions from artists such as Benoît Pioulard, r beny, and Steven Kemner. Its proceeds are donated to Conservation International.[11][12][13]
Sustain Series, Vol. 2 continued the series in 2021, with its proceeds directed to Julie’s Bicycle, the British arts and climate non-profit. Sustain Series, Vol. 3 was then released in 2022, supporting Eden Reforestation Projects.[14][15][16]
Other releases
Alongside the Sustain compilation series, Ambientologist has issued releases from a number of ambient and experimental artists, including Jolanda Moletta, Henrik Meierkord, Jupi/ter, Sven Laux, and Fionnlagh.[17][18][19]
