Almarhum is a 2025 Indonesian supernatural horror film directed by Adhe Dharmasatriya, written by Evelyn Afnilia, and produced by Unlimited Production and A&Z Films. The film stars Ratu Sofya, Dimas Aditya, and Rukman Rosadi, and is about a family which has just lost one of its members and experiences a series of terrifying events.
The film premiered in Indonesia on 9 January 2025.[1]
Plot
Mulwanto is a plantation owner who has 3 kids. The youngest, Yanda, refuses to go college like his older siblings. On Tuesday, 22 Kliwon, on the graduation ceremony of his second-oldest Nuri, Mulwanto died due to electrocution while taking a bath. Superstition says that anyone who dies on a Kliwon Tuesday will make members of their family die as well. The bereaved family must do a series of platebreaking rituals to avoid that. Wisesa, the eldest child, who works as a doctor, refuses to do the ritual because it is illogical. Mulwanto's wife Rahmi does not participate due to her weak condition and walks behind the procession alongside Wisesa.
On the second morning after Mulwanto's death, Rahmi is found sleeping on the street in front of the house and is saved right as a car is driving by. She, who always feels cold, tells Nuri and Ajeng, Mulwanto's niece, that she will go soon and will take them with her. On the third day, Wisesa returns to Jogja because he has to get back to work. Later that night, a pocong appears in Rahmi's bedroom, and the ceiling fan falls, killing her.
After Rahmi's death, Wisesa starts seeing apparitions and feeling cold all the time. After Rahmi's burial, Nuri and Yanda visits Mbah Sukma, a dukun living in the middle of the woods recommended by Pak Budi. At the same time, Wisesa starts suspecting Pak Budi, who has always meddled in family affairs, before finding an eyeball and a wrapping under his bed. After sending a picture of the wrapping to his sister, he sees and follows an apparition of his father which walks into the woods. He injures his leg on an animal trap. After hailing a car driving by, he is driven to a nearby puskesmas. There, he hallucinates getting placed inside the morgue and dies after falling from a bed and getting his head pierced through by a piece of metal.
Wisesa is buried on the fifth day after Mulwanto's death. Nuri and Yanda brings the wrapping Wisesa found to Mbah Sukma. He immediately discovers that Mulwanto's family is targeted with black magic, and performs a ritual to redirect it back to its sender. The sender turns out to be Mulwanto's brother-in-law Suyono, who left Ajeng in Mulwanto's care to be sent to college after Suyono's wife died. In reality, Mulwanto never sent Ajeng to collegeand only got her to be a horsekeeper. The enraged Suyono uses dark magic, with Ajeng's help, on Mulwanto's whole family. Thanks to Mbah Sukma's ritual, the dark magic turns on Suyono and kills him. Not long after, Ajeng suddenly gets her leg stuck and is dragged by a horse to her death.
Nuri chooses to stay and build the village with Pak Lurah, and postpones continuing her higher education at Jogja. Yanda is still confused whether they made it out alive due to the platebreaking or Mbak Sukma's ritual. Meanwhile, Pak Budi visits Mbah Sukma, where Mbah Sukma pays respect to him, and then Pak Budi smiles.
