Alexandre Ferrari-Roy is a Canadian entrepreneur, urban agriculture executive, and actor. He is the co-founder and CEO of MicroHabitat, a turnkey urban farming company founded in 2016 in Montreal, Quebec. MicroHabitat operates a network of urban farms across North America and Europe.[1][2]
Early life and education
Ferrari-Roy attended Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf before studying environmental and agricultural sciences at McGill University's Macdonald Campus. During his studies, he completed a research internship at the University of the West Indies in Barbados. His interest in sustainable agriculture developed after reading Food, Inc. while travelling abroad, which led him to shift from earlier interests in art and science toward agricultural entrepreneurship.[1][3][4]
Before founding MicroHabitat, Ferrari-Roy worked in operations roles in Montreal's restaurant industry, including as a brewer and quality controller at Rise Kombucha.[4][1]
Career
Early ventures
Ferrari-Roy's first involvement in urban agriculture began with informal farming on underutilised spaces at McGill University's Macdonald Campus, the largest green space on the Island of Montreal. He subsequently presented a related business concept at a startup competition at McGill, where a judge who owned a restaurant invited him to test the concept on the restaurant's rooftop.[1]
MicroHabitat
Ferrari-Roy began developing urban farming concepts and production methods while at McGill.[1][4] After approximately three years of experimentation, he and Orlane Panet co-founded MicroHabitat as a corporation in 2016 in Montreal.[1][5] The company provides a turnkey urban agriculture service, designing, installing, and maintaining modular farms on rooftops, terraces, and other outdoor spaces for corporate and institutional clients. The company's standard package includes 30 lightweight geotextile pots capable of producing up to approximately 350 pounds of organic produce per season.[1]
The company expanded from initial locations in Montreal to 140 farms by 2022, operating in Toronto, Vancouver, and New York City. By 2023, the company was launching operations in additional cities including Calgary, Edmonton, and several US markets.[1][5] MicroHabitat has partnered with real estate firms including GWL Realty Advisors and Ivanhoé Cambridge, and collaborated with BOMA Canada on a guide to urban agriculture in commercial real estate.[1]
Acting
Ferrari-Roy appeared in the film The King's Sacrifice (2023).[6]
Recognition
In 2023, Ferrari-Roy was named a finalist in the Montreal region of La Financière agricole du Québec's "Tournez-vous vers l'excellence!" competition, recognised for his leadership and business development.[2]
