Alexander Samuel (born 21 December 1984) is a French biologist, mathematics teacher, and social activist. He gained public attention during the Yellow vests protests for raising health concerns related to the use of tear gas in demonstrations, as well as for his science communication and whistleblowing activities related to public health and COVID-19 misinformation.
Early life and education
Samuel was born in Germany to German parents and later became a naturalized French citizen in 2007. He earned a PhD in molecular biology in 2013 from University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, with a dissertation on genomic functions of the transcription factor Otx2 in the adult mouse retina.[1]
He works as a mathematics and science teacher in a vocational high school in Grasse, France.[2]
Yellow vests movement
Samuel became involved in the Yellow vests protests in 2018–2019, where he criticized the widespread use of tear gas by French police forces. He argued, based on toxicological literature, that the CS gas used in crowd control could metabolize into cyanide compounds, potentially causing acute and long-term health effects.[3]
Legal proceedings
Samuel was detained several times during demonstrations between 2019 and 2020; these cases were later dismissed without prosecution.[4]
In 2022, he stood trial alongside two physicians for coordinating blood sampling during demonstrations. He was acquitted, although the prosecution initially appealed the ruling.[5]
Work on tear gas
During the Yellow vests protests, Samuel collaborated with toxicologist André Picot to publish analyses of the biochemical mechanisms of CS tear gas, compiling existing scientific literature on its health effects.[6]
COVID-19 science communication
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Samuel published popular science articles and appeared in media interviews to counter misinformation related to vaccines, treatments, and clinical studies. He publicly criticized the work of Didier Raoult, leading to a defamation lawsuit that was ultimately withdrawn.[7]
