Alex Vaz
Alex Vaz was an Indian football referee and referees' instructor who officiated at national and international levels, including the 1968 AFC Asian Cup. He was included in the FIFA Panel of Referees in 1972 and later served as a referee instructor for FIFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Early and domestic career
Vaz began his refereeing career in 1956 under the Western India Football Association (WIFA). In 1968, he was promoted to the national panel of referees by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). He officiated extensively in domestic competitions across India and was regarded as one of the leading referees in the country.[1]
International career
Vaz officiated at the 1968 AFC Asian Cup held in Tehran, where he refereed multiple matches, including Hong Kong vs Israel (12 May 1968), Burma vs Iran (16 May 1968), and Iran vs Israel (19 May 1968), the latter being a decisive match in the tournament.[2]
In 1972, he was selected to the FIFA Panel of Referees, enabling him to officiate in international competitions. He was associated with pre-World Cup qualifying tournaments, including assignments in Iran (1973) and Singapore (1977).
Referee instructor and administration
After his active refereeing career, Vaz served as a referee instructor for FIFA, AFC, and AIFF. He conducted training courses for referees in several countries, including Iraq, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
He also held administrative roles in Indian sport. He served as president of the Bombay Referees' Association and was associated with the Mumbai Schools Sports Association, contributing to the development of school-level sports.[3] [4]
