Akil Adams is the first professional black hockey player from the city of Detroit, Michigan. Born in Detroit, Mi to parents John and Rita Adams in 1974. At the age of 14 Akil attended the University of Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI., to play varsity hockey. After a successful season he went on to play for the Michigan Nationals AAA youth hockey organization. At age 16 Adams was drafted in the USHL (United States Hockey League) in the 2nd round to the Dubuque Fighting Saints. He was also invited to tryout for the Under 18 United States National Team (Hockey).

Akil's rookie year with the Dubuque Fighting Saints he was named to the USHL All-Star Team and was also named to the USHL's 2nd team all league. Akil was heavily recruited by many division 1 hockey programs and decided to take the full-scholarship offer from the University of North Dakota, where he played alongside Landon Wilson (1993 NHL 1st round pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs) and Brad Bombadir (NHL 3rd round pick-New Jersey Devils and Stanley Cup Winner- 2000-New Jersey Devils)

Akil played at University of North Dakota during his Freshman and half of his sophomore season before leaving to play with the Windsor Spitfires in the Ontario Hockey League along side of Ed Jovanovski (NHL 1994 first overall pick to the Florida Panthers).

After one season with the Windsor Spitfires Akil was traded to the Ottawa 67's and played for NHL Hall of Fame Brian Kilrea. He played in front of goal tender Kevin Weekes (NHL 2nd round pick-Florida Panthers). Akil alsoplayed along side Steve Washburn (NHL 1993 3rd round pick-Florida Panthers) and Alyn McCauley (NHL 4th round pick-New Jersey Deils).

PRO CAREER
