Agavepura refers to a category of 100 % agave spirits produced outside Mexico, characterised by their production from pure agave without additives and the exclusion of Mexican geographic indications such as tequila and mezcal. The term has been used in trade media to describe agave spirits that emphasise purity and provenance while originating from countries other than Mexico, where traditional protections restrict the use of established names like tequila and mezcal.[1][2]
Definition
Agavepura denotes spirits crafted entirely from the fermented and distilled sugars of agave plants, using no additives, colouring, flavouring agents, or other non-agave ingredients. The category emphasises both 100 % agave composition and clean production methods, differentiating such products from blends or spirits that use permitted additives.[3] Unlike tequila and mezcal, which are legally protected geographical indications specific to Mexico, agavepura products may be made in a variety of countries where the term has been popularised in industry commentary rather than through internationally recognised regulatory frameworks.[4]
Background
Agave spirits traditionally originate in Mexico, where tequila and mezcal have protected designations of origin that restrict use of the name to products made within specific regions under defined production standards.[5][circular reference][6][circular reference] However, agave plants, especially species like Agave americana, grow naturally in regions outside Mexico, including parts of India, Africa, Australia and the southern United States. Producers in these areas have increasingly issued agave spirits that are not eligible for classification as tequila or mezcal under Mexican or international appellation law but which nevertheless are distilled from agave sugars.[7]
The use of the term “agavepura” emerged in the trade press and spirits industry coverage in connection with the launch of certain Indian-produced agave spirits, where it served to highlight purity (100 % agave) and additive-free credentials alongside global market ambitions. The category has been discussed as part of a broader trend in global spirits whereby producers outside Mexico craft agave-based distillates, seeking differentiation and recognition in international markets amid rising consumer interest in agave flavours and craft spirits innovation.[8]
Examples Maya Pistola Agavepura
One of the most widely referenced early examples of the agavepura concept is Maya Pistola Agavepura, a spirit produced in Goa, India. It is made from wild Agave americana sourced from the Deccan Plateau, brought to the country by Queen Victoria to stop cows getting onto the railway tracks and distilled and aged without additives. Industry coverage has described it as India’s first 100 % agave spirit and a catalyst for the agavepura category’s emergence in export markets such as the United Kingdom. Since its introduction, the brand has been noted for winning multiple international awards and attracting strategic investment from established spirits companies.[9][10] The term “agavepura” was used in association with this product to denote category positioning — a 100 % agave, additive-free spirit crafted outside of Mexico and launched internationally.[11]
Market and Recognition
Industry commentators and spirits publications have identified the growth of agave spirits produced beyond Mexico as part of a broader diversification within the global agave spirits sector. This includes expressions from regions such as South Africa and the United States, where producers experiment with locally grown agave or related plants, and where different regulatory environments allow innovation beyond the geographical indications of traditional Mexican spirits.[12] Although not regulated as a formal appellation like tequila or mezcal, agavepura has become a term of art in trade media to categorise additive-free agave spirits produced internationally.
