13 Celsius
13 Celsius (stylized 13 celsius) is a wine bar and café located in the Midtown neighborhood of Houston, Texas. Opened in 2006, the establishment operates out of a restored early-20th-century building and is known for its wine program and champagne offerings. It has received coverage and recognition from local and national food and travel publications.[1]
Location and Setting
13 Celsius is located at 3000 Caroline Street in the Midtown/Montrose area of Houston. The bar occupies a Mediterranean-style commercial structure built in the 1920s, originally housing Jenning’s Cleaners and Dyeing Shoppe. Renovations preserved several historic elements, including portions of the original façade and a pressed tin ceiling.
An open-air courtyard was created during redevelopment after part of the roof collapsed prior to renovation. Interior features include a long marble bar and furnishings salvaged from the former Warwick Hotel, a historic Houston property.
History
The wine bar was founded by Ian Rosenberg and a group of investors and opened to the public on December 27, 2006. The stated goal of the project was to preserve the historic building while creating a neighborhood gathering place centered on wine.
Since 2012, the wine program has been overseen by sommelier Adele Corrigan Wade, who has been featured in The Houston Chronicle for her approach to wine selection and service at 13 Celsius.[2]
Concept and Offerings
The name 13 Celsius refers to the approximate cellar temperature at which wine is traditionally stored. The bar maintains wine storage and service at this temperature, a practice that has been noted in coverage of Houston wine bars.[3]
The wine list rotates regularly and includes wines by the glass and bottle, as well as champagne and fortified wines. Additional beverages include beer, aperitifs, and bitters. Food offerings focus on small plates such as cheese and charcuterie boards, sandwiches, and desserts.
In the 2020s, the business introduced a private wine label, Patina, beginning with a Barbera wine from Piedmont, Italy, followed by a Chardonnay from the Petit Chablis region of France.
Ambiance
The venue includes indoor seating and a courtyard space. Reviewers have described the atmosphere as relaxed and candle-lit in the evenings, with an emphasis on wine education and attentive service.[4]
