Συνήθως, ο όρος VGA αναφέρεται στην ανάλυση 640×480 εικονοστοιχείων (pixels). Επίσης, αναφέρεται στο βύσμα 15-pin D-subminiature, το οποίο χρησιμοποιείται για τη μεταφορά του αναλογικού σήματος εικόνας όλων των αναλύσεων.
Τα τυποποιημένα modes γραφικών VGA είναι:
- 640×480 στα 16 χρώματα
- 640×350 στα 16 χρώματα
- 320×200 στα 16 χρώματα
- 320×200 στα 256 χρώματα (Mode 13h)
Επίσης, το πρότυπο VGA υποστηρίζει τα παλαιότερα EGA, CGA και MDΑ.
Το VGA ξεπεράστηκε από το XGA (1024x768 pixels) της IBM, και από πολλές ακόμη επεκτάσεις, π.χ. SVGA, SXGA, UXGA, κτλ.
Εξέλιξή του είναι το καλώδιο DVI.
