The Beginning είναι ο τίτλος της συλλογής τραγουδιών του δανέζικου heavy metal συγκροτήματος Mercyful Fate, η οποία κυκλοφόρησε στις 24 Ιουνίου του 1987 μέσω της δισκογραφικής εταιρείας Roadrunner.[1]

Τα κομμάτια της συλλογής προέρχονται από την πρώτη εποχή του συγκροτήματος και πιο συγκεκριμένα τον δίσκο "Melissa" και το ΕΡ "Mercyful Fate". Το "Black Masses" ηχογραφήθηκε στις 19, 22 και 27 Ιουλίου του 1983 και συμπεριλήφθηκε σε σινγκλ μαζί με το "Black Funeral" τον Δεκέμβριο του 1983.[2] Το "Black Funeral" είχε αρχικά συμπεριληφθεί στην συλλογή "Metallic Storm", η οποία είχε κυκλοφορήσει το 1982 από την Ebony Records.[3] Επίσης, τα τραγούδια "Curse of the Pharaohs", "Evil" και "Satan's Fall" είναι εκτελεσμένα ζωντανά για την εκπομπή "Friday Rock Show" του BBC Radio 1 στις 19 Μαρτίου 1983.[4]
