Το NGC 5189

Το NGC 5189 ή Gum 47 ή IC 4274 είναι πλανητικό νεφέλωμα στον νότιο αστερισμό Μυία. Το ανακάλυψε ο James Dunlop την 1η Ιουλίου 1826 και το καταλογογράφησε ως Δ252.[1] Μέχρι την δεκαετία του 1960 θεωρούνταν πως επρόκειτο για νεφέλωμα εκπομπής, όμως το 1967 ο Karl Gordon Henize το περιέγραψε ως οιονεί πλανητικό βάσει των φασματικών εκπομπών του.

Ιδωμένο από τηλεσκόπιο μοιάζει με τον λατινικό χαρακτήρα "S". Το γεγονός αυτό σε συνδυασμό με την συμμετρία που παρουσιάζει ως προς το νοητό κέντρο του οδήγησαν τους αστρονόμους στο συμπέρασμα πως ο κεντρικός αστέρας του NGC 5189 ήταν διπλό άστρο.[2] Παρατηρήσεις με το Μεγάλο Τηλεσκόπιο Νότιας Αφρικής (Southern African Large Telescope) έδειξαν τελικά πως ένας λευκός νάνος βρίσκεται σε τροχιά με περίοδο 4,04 ημερών γύρω από το κεντρικό άστρο του νεφελώματος.[3] Εκτιμάται πως το NGC 5189 απέχει 1.780 έτη φωτός από την Γη[4] Άλλες μετρήσεις δείχνουν αποστάσεις μέχρι και 3.000 ετών φωτός.[5]
