HMS Beagle

To HMS Beagle ήταν πλοίο του βασιλικού ναυτικού της Βρετανίας, ένα από τα εκατό και πλέον πλοία κλάσης «Τσερόκι» που κατασκευάστηκαν στις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα. Η καθέλκυση του πλοίου έγινε στις 11 Μαΐου 1820 στον Τάμεση και φέρεται να είναι το πρώτο πλοίο που πέρασε κάτω από την παλιά γέφυρα του Λονδίνου.[1][2] Μιας και δεν υπήρχε καμία άμεση ανάγκη χρήσης του, το Beagle ήταν συνήθως αγκυροβολημένο, αλλά χωρίς ιστούς ή ξάρτια. Στη συνέχεια προσαρμόστηκε ως σκάφος έρευνας και έλαβε μέρος σε τρεις αποστολές.

Το Beagle είναι ιδιαιτέρως γνωστό, καθώς με αυτό ταξίδεψε για πέντε χρόνια ο νεαρός Κάρολος Δαρβίνος, διαμορφώνοντας μέσα από τις έρευνές του το διάστημα αυτό τις ιδέες του περί της εξέλιξης μέσω φυσικής επιλογής.[2][3]
