    • Ο βυζαντινός αυτοκράτορας Ιουστινιανός στέλνει το στρατηγό Βελισάριο στο Βασίλειο των Οστρογότθων με ένα ανεπαρκές εκστρατευτικό σώμα αποτελούμενο από 4.000 άντρες και 200 πλοία.[1]
    • Ο Βελισάριος νικά το γοτθικό στρατό του βασιλιά Τωτίλα, ο οποίος ανεπιτυχώς πολιορκεί την πόλη του Οτράντο. Μετά την υποχώρησή των Γότθων, οι Βυζαντινοί κατευθύνονται προς την πόλη της Ρώμης.
  • Ο Ιουστινιανός εκδίδει το διάταγμα κατά των Τριών Κεφαλαίων. Ο Πάπας Βιγίλιος αρνείται να αναγνωρίσει το αυτοκρατορικό έδικτο και καλείται στην Κωνσταντινούπολη από τον αυτοκράτορα για την επίλυση του ζητήματος με σύνοδο.
