Volksoper

Volksoper versteht sich ursprünglich als Gegenbegriff zu Hofoper (ähnlich wie Volkstheater ein Gegenbegriff zu Hoftheater ist). In der Zeit des Ancien Régime bis 1918 war damit ein für das Volk zugängliches und erschwingliches Opernhaus gemeint, während die Hofoper stets noch zum Adelshof gehörte und einen exklusiveren Rahmen hatte. „Volksoper“ wurden auch populäre Opernwerke genannt wie Engelbert Humperdincks Hänsel und Gretel (1893).
