Them Changes ist ein Rock-Song von Buddy Miles, der auf seinem gleichnamigen Studioalbum im Jahr 1970 veröffentlicht wurde. Das in der Tonart E-Dur[1] verfasste Lied wurde von Robin McBride produziert.[2]

Hintergrund

Am Neujahrstag 1970 trat Buddy Miles zusammen mit Jimi Hendrix und Billy Cox als Band of Gypsys im New Yorker Fillmore East auf. Dabei spielte das Trio auch den Song, den Hendrix wie folgt ansagte: „Buddy Miles wrote a song he called Them Changes.“ Auf dem gleichnamigen Album vom März 1970 mit Live-Aufnahmen des Neujahrskonzerts wird der Titel lediglich als Changes ausgewiesen.

Im März 1970 erschien die Vorab-Single Them Changes von Buddy Miles & The Freedom Express. Sie war eine Auskopplung aus dem im Juni 1970 zu erwartenden Album gleichen Namens.[3]

Im Jahr 1972 spielten Carlos Santana und Buddy Miles Them Changes live, dokumentiert auf dem gemeinsamen Album Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles! Live!.[4]

Ab 1987 war Miles Mitglied der Band von Carlos Santana und kam im Rahmen von dessen Freedom-Tour auch in die DDR. Am 5. und 6. April 1987 trat Miles mit Santana im Palast der Republik in Ost-Berlin auf. Bei dem Auftritt spielten sie auch Them Changes.[5] Mehrere Live-Versionen von Miles, unter anderem vom Woodstock Reunion Concert 1989, wurden veröffentlicht.[6]

Coverversionen

Im Bereich des Jazz und Fusion wurde der Titel ab den 1970er-Jahren mehrmals gecovert, u. a. von Lionel Hampton, Ramsey Lewis, Paul Humphrey, George Gruntz, Bobby McFerrin, Steve Gadd, Tom Scott und Linda Sharrock.[7] Gecovert wurde die Aufnahme auch von Eric Clapton und Steve Winwood auf ihrem Kollaborationsalbum bzw. dem Konzertfilm Live from Madison Square Garden aus dem Jahr 2009.[8]

Im Jahr 2017 verwendeten Die Fantastischen Vier das Hauptthema des Liedes für ihren Song Endzeitstimmung.
