Sassandra ist eine Stadt im Distrikt Bas-Sassandra der Elfenbeinküste und auch Hauptstadt des gleichnamigen Départements.

Geographie

Die Stadt liegt am Golf von Guinea an der Mündung des Sassandra Flusses.

Geschichte

Sassandra wurde von den Portugiesen, den ersten Erforscher des Golf von Guinea, als São Andrea gegründet. Die kolonialen Ruinen kann man noch heute besichtigen. Der Hafen wurde später von den Briten und Franzosen für Holz-Exporte genutzt. Die Stadt starb in den 1960er Jahren regelrecht aus, nachdem der Hafen von San-Pédro fertig wurde.

Wirtschaft

Die heutige Industrie beschränkt sich auf die Fischerei.

Sassandra ist bekannt für ihre Strände und Leuchttürme, der Gaoulou National Park liegt in der Nähe.
