Proton VPN ist ein VPN-Dienst der im Jahr 2017 veröffentlicht wurde[2] und von der Schweizer Firma Proton AG betrieben wird.[3] Die Firma ist bekannt für ihren E-Mail-Dienst Proton Mail. Am 17. Juni 2024 gab die Firma bekannt sich zu einer Schweizer Non-Profit-Organisation umzufirmieren.[4] Der Quelltext zur Software wurde in diesem Zuge ebenfalls veröffentlicht[5] und unter der der GPL-Lizenz lizenziert und ist damit Open Source.

Eigenschaften

Proton VPN hat insgesamt 15.039 Server in 122 Ländern (Stand 30. August 2025)[6].

In einem Vergleich von zehn verschiedenen VPN-Anbietern im Januar 2024 durch das Technikmagazin CHIP ging Proton VPN als Gewinner hervor.[7]
