Porter Grainger
Porter Parish Grainger (* 22. Oktober 1891 in Bowling Green (Kentucky) als Porter Granger; † 30. Oktober 1948 in Pittsburgh) war ein amerikanischer Jazz- und Bluesmusiker (Piano, Komposition), der vor allem als Autor der Standards „Ain’t Nobody’s Business“ und „Dying Crapshooter’s Blues“ sowie als Begleiter klassischer Bluessängerinnen erinnert wird.
Leben und Wirken
Grainger begann 1916 in Chicago als Pianist zu arbeiten.[1] 1920 zog er nach New York, wo er Bluessängerinnen wie Gladys Bryant, Ethel Finnie, Clara Smith, Rosa Henderson und Victoria Spivey begleitete und bald auch für diverse Shows komponierte, teilweise gemeinsam mit Bob Ricketts. Grainger war weiterhin der Leiter der Get Happy Band, die zwei Duette aufnahm, darunter Puddin’ Papa/On the Puppy’s Tail (1925). Gemeinsam mit Bob Ricketts schrieb und veröffentlichte Grainger 1926 das Buch „How to Play and Sing the Blues Like the Phonograph and Stage Artists“.[2]
1928 begleitete Grainger Bessie Smith in der Produktion „Mississippi Days“, für die er auch den „Homeless Blues“ verfasste.[3] Er nahm neben ihr auch mit Dolly Ross, Clint Jones, Ada Brown, Buddy Christian’s Four Cry-Babies und den Harmony Hounds auf. Er leitete und spielte Klavier bei Vokalgruppenaufnahmen der Porter Grainger’s Three Jazz Songsters und Porter Grainger’s Jubilee Singers (1926–27)[2] und unterstützte auf dem Klavier Mamie Smith nicht nur in dem Kurzfilm Jailhouse Blues (1929), sondern auch bei Bühnenauftritten.[1] Er war zunächst mit der Bluessängerin Ethel Finney, später mit Alies Kieth verheiratet.
In den 1930er Jahren fand Grainger weniger Beachtung, arrangierte aber weiterhin für Swingbands.[4] Die 1996 erschienene RST-CD 1923–1929 in Chronological Order enthält einige seiner wichtigsten Aufnahmen. Seine Melodien wurden auch in Filmen wie King of Comedy (1982), Die Farbe Lila (1985) und American Splendor (2003) eingesetzt.
