Nowra

Nowra ist eine Stadt im australischen Bundesstaat New South Wales und liegt etwa 160 Kilometer südlich von Sydney am Shoalhaven River. Sie ist eng verbunden mit dem am gegenüberliegenden Flussufer liegenden Bomaderry. Nowra-Bomaderry hat über 33.000 Einwohner (Stand 2021).[1]

In Nowra befindet sich der Verwaltungssitz des lokalen Verwaltungsgebiets Shoalhaven City.

Zehn Kilometer südwestlich liegt der Militärflugplatz HMAS Albatross der Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

Geschichte

Nowra wurde 1852 gegründet. Die Stadt ist Knotenpunkt der Milchwirtschaft in der umliegenden Region und Endstation der Bahnlinie aus dem Norden.

Im Februar 2012 starben in Jaspers Brush nahe Nowra bei einem Helikopterabsturzkurz nach dem Start die bekannten Dokumentarfilmer und National-Geographic-Mitarbeiter Mike deGruy und Andrew Wight. DeGruy, der für seine Leistungen im Bereich Kameraführung mit mehreren Emmys und BAFTAs ausgezeichnet worden war, war auf Unterwasser-Dokumentationen spezialisiert sowie als U-Boot-Pilot an James Camerons Dokumentarfilm „Last Mysteries of the Titanic“ (2005) beteiligt. Der 52-jährige Australier Andrew Wight war Autor und Produzent des 3-D-Thrillers „Sanctum“, der an den australischen Kinokassen zum erfolgreichsten Film des Jahres 2010 wurde.
