Der Mombacho ist ein Vulkan in Nicaragua nahe der Stadt Granada. Er ist 1.345 m hoch. Der Mombacho ist ein aktiver Schichtvulkan, ist aber seit 1570 nicht mehr ausgebrochen. Über frühere Eruptionen gibt es keine Aufzeichnungen, sie sind aber geologisch untersucht und datiert[1]. Im Holozän kollabierten die seitlichen Hänge des Vulkans mindestens zweimal, dabei entstanden im Süden El Crater und im Nordosten Las Isletas[2].

Auf den unteren Hängen des Vulkans wird auf den fruchtbaren vulkanischen Böden trotz des schwierigen Terrains auf Plantagen Kaffee angebaut, von 1862 (Ley de Agricultura) bis in die 1920er Jahre durch Schuldknechte (Peonage)[3]. Große Plantagen waren hier vorherrschend[4]. Nach der sandinistischen Revolution wurden einige der Plantagen verstaatlicht, andere blieben in Privatbesitz[5].

Unterhalb von 800 m wächst Laubwald, darüber, bis fast zum Gipfel, Nebelwald mit zahlreichen Farnen und Bedecktsamern[6]. Heute werden in einem Naturreservat Reste des tropischen Regenwaldes geschützt. Es umfasst 700 ha. Die Liste der dortigen Pflanzen[7] enthält etwa 700 Arten, darunter viele Orchideen. Endemisch ist die Orchidee Maxillaria mombachoensis.

Tourismus

Vom Vulkan besteht Sicht auf den Nicaraguasee. Es gibt mehrere Wander- und Kletterwege.

Kulturelle Rezeption

José Coronel Urtecho (1906 – 1994) publizierte 1931 in der Zeitung El Correo de Granada eine Ode an den Vulkan (“Oda al Mombacho”)[8]. Der erloschene Vulkan wird als dickbäuchiger Großbürger vorgestellt, ein fetter fauler Eunuch, ein Versager[9]. Coronel Urtecho bezieht sich hier parodisierend auf Rubén Daríos Gedicht Momotombo und thematisiert gleichzeitig die Beziehung zwischen den Städten Léon und Granada. Die Ode wurde von den Sandinisten Tomas Borge Martinez 1986 in die Anthologie "Nicaragua: Un siglo en veinte y tres poemas" aufgenommen[10].
