Das Adjektiv katholisch (von altgriechisch καθολικός katholikós, deutsch ‚allumfassend‘) bezieht sich auf:

  • die römisch-katholische Kirche, die größte Kirche des Christentums, bestehend aus mehreren Teilkirchen, die den Jurisdiktionsprimat des Papstes von 1870 anerkennen
  • die altkatholische Kirche, die nach Einführung des Jurisdiktionsprimats des Papstes in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern von katholischen Bischöfen gegründet wurde, um die alte katholische Tradition fortzuführen, der aus ihrer Sicht das Jurisdiktionsprimat widerspricht.
  • den Katholizismus, die Gesamtheit des Christentums römisch-katholischer Prägung
  • die Katholizität, Wesenseigenschaft der Kirche, die Einhaltung der katholischen Lehre in der Universalität und Einheit der Kirche
  • jene Kirchen, die sich als Teil der Universalkirche in der Katholizität verstehen – siehe Ekklesiologie
