I386

i386 wird zumeist als Bezeichnung für die 32-Bit-x86-Architektur ab dem Intel 80386 verwendet, die von Intel retronym auch mit IA-32 (für „Intel Architecture, 32 Bit“) bezeichnet wurde. Gleichzeitig ist es jedoch auch der nach Veröffentlichung des 80386 von Intel eingeführte Markenname für den Prozessor selbst, der auch bei dessen Nachfolger, dem i486, in gleicher Form genutzt wurde.

Viele Betriebssysteme und Computerprogramme benutzen „i386“ als Beschreibung der Rechnerarchitektur, auf der sie laufen. In dieser Verwendung ist i386 ein Synonym für IA-32. Beispielsweise ist diverse Software für die „i386“-Architektur nicht immer auch auf 80386-kompatiblen Systemen lauffähig, sondern benötigen oft modernere 32-Bit-x86-Prozessoren wie i486 (80486-kompatibel), i586 (Pentium-kompatibel) oder i686 (Pentium-II-/P6-kompatible Computer). Ein Beispiel dafür sind Linux-Distributionen. So setzt etwa Debian i386 ab Version 9 „Stretch“ mindestens einen i686-kompatiblen 32-Bit-x86-Prozessor voraus. Auch das Executable and Linking Format (ELF) oder Mach-O-Dateien bzw. Universal Binaries bezeichnen 32-Bit-x86-Code mit „i386“ – auch, wenn für die Ausführung ein neuerer x86-Prozessor als ein 80386er nötig ist.[1]

Für die 64-Bit-Erweiterung x64, auch x86-64 (für x86, 64 Bit), wird die Bezeichnung „i386“ nicht verwendet, allerdings wurde später in Anlehnung an „x86-64“ auch die 32-Bit-x86-Architektur teils mit x86-32 (für x86, 32 Bit) bezeichnet.
