Handwara ist eine Stadt (Municipal Committee) im Nordwesten des indischen Unionsterritoriums Jammu und Kashmir.
Sie liegt im gleichnamigen Tehsil im Distrikt Kupwara. Beim Zensus 2011 lag die Einwohnerzahl bei 13.600.[2] Die Geschlechterverteilung liegt bei 843 Frauen auf 1000 Männer.[2] Knapp 90 % sind Muslime, 8,2 % Hindus.[2]
Die Stadt Handwara liegt im Norden des Kaschmirtals an den östlichen Ausläufern des Pir Panjal auf einer Höhe von 1605 m. Der Fluss Talri verläuft 2 km östlich der Stadt. Handwara liegt 15 km südlich der Distrikthauptstadt Kupwara sowie 20 km nordwestlich von Sopore.
Klima
Das Klima in Handwara ist warm-gemäßigt. Die regenreichsten Monate sind März und April. Die durchschnittliche Jahresniederschlagsmenge beträgt 847 mm.
