HMS Formidable
Mindestens sieben Schiffe der britischen Royal Navy trugen den Namen HMS Formidable nach dem französischen Wort für „stark“ oder „gewaltig“.
- Die erste HMS Formidable war ein französisches Linienschiff mit 80 Kanonen, das 1759 in der Seeschlacht in der Bucht von Quiberon von den Briten erobert und in HMS Ham umbenannt wurde.
- Die zweite HMS Formidable war ein 90-Kanonen-Linienschiff der Barfleur-Klasse, das 1777 vom Stapel lief, 1778 an der Seeschlacht bei Ouessant teilnahm und 1782 als Flaggschiff von Rodney in der Schlacht von Les Saintes diente. Sie wurde 1813 abgewrackt.
- Die dritte HMS Formidable war ein französisches Linienschiff mit 74 Kanonen, das 1795 von den Briten erobert und unter dem Namen HMS Belleisle in den Dienst der Royal Navy gestellt wurde.
- Die vierte Formidable war ein Linienschiff mit 80 Kanonen, das 1825 vom Stapel lief und 1906 zum Abwracken verkauft wurde.
- Die fünfte HMS Formidable war ein Schlachtschiff und namengebend für die Formidable-Klasse. Sie lief 1898 vom Stapel und wurde 1915 durch das deutsche U-Boot U 24 vor der Isle of Portland versenkt, wobei 547 Besatzungsmitglieder starben. Sie war das erste vom Gegner versenkte britische Schlachtschiff im Ersten Weltkrieg.
- Die sechste HMS Formidable (R67) war ein Flugzeugträger der Illustrious-Klasse. Sie lief 1939 vom Stapel, nahm am Zweiten Weltkrieg teil – u. a. an der Schlacht bei Kap Matapan, der Invasion Siziliens und der Schlacht um Okinawa – und wurde 1956 verschrottet.
