Gympie (2005)

Gympie ist eine Stadt im australischen Bundesstaat Queensland mit 19.435 Einwohnern.[1] Sie liegt etwa 160 km nördlich von Brisbane auf einer Höhe von circa 95 m am Mary River.

Nach Goldfunden 1867 entstand in den Weidelandsiedlungen nördlich von Brisbane die Goldgräberstadt Gympie. Man sagt, die Entdeckung habe damals den vor dem Bankrott stehenden Bundesstaat Queensland gerettet.

Bis 1925 wurden etwa 99 Tonnen Gold abgebaut. Danach stellte sich der Ort auf Landwirtschaft um, vor allem Viehzucht und Milchwirtschaft bestimmen die Einnahmen der Stadt. Gympie ist der Verwaltungssitz des 2008 neu geschaffenen lokalen Verwaltungsgebiets Gympie Regional Council.
