Der Name leitet sich von den althochdeutschen Begriffen fridu („Schutz vor Waffengewalt, Friede“) und lind („sanft, weich, mild“) ab. Des Weiteren unterliegt er dem Einfluss des Wortes linta (ahd. für „Linde, Schild aus Lindenholz“).[1]
