Freckleton

Freckleton ist ein Dorf in der englischen Grafschaft Lancashire, genauer im Verwaltungsbezirk Borough of Fylde.

Bekannt ist es durch den Warton Aerodrome, einer Luftwaffenbasis aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, welche heute dem Luftfahrt- und Verteidigungskonzern BAE Systems zur Flugzeugerprobung dient.[1]

Freckleton ist seit 1965 der Schauplatz des ältesten Halbmarathon-Wettbewerbs Großbritanniens.[2]

Das Dorf wurde im Domesday Book als Frecheltun erstmals erwähnt. Der Name soll Gehöft eines Mannes namens Frecla bedeuten.[3]

Flugzeugunglück 1944

Nach Wartungsarbeiten starteten am 23. August mehrere Maschinen vom Typ B-24 Liberator zu Testflügen. Im Laufe des Testfluges wurde die Crew des Flugzeugs Classy Chassis II angewiesen, trotz eines heftigen Gewitters auf RAF Warton zu landen.

Bei niedriger Bewölkung und starken Windböen touchierte die Maschine einen Baum und sodann ein ungenutztes Gebäude. Flugzeugteile stürzten auf die Sad Sack Snack Bar, wo 14 Erwachsene getötet wurden. Die Flügel mit den Treibstofftanks fielen auf die Kindertagesstätte der Holy Trinity School. 38 Schulkinder starben. Insgesamt verloren bei der Katastrophe 61 Menschen ihr Leben.[4]

Es handelte sich um das schlimmste Flugzeugunglück der Welt, bis beim Flugunfall von Llandow 1950 achtzig Menschen ums Leben kamen.
