Edwin Muir

Edwin Muir (* 15. Mai 1887 in Deerness, Orkney; † 3. Januar 1959 in Swaffham Prior) war ein schottischer Schriftsteller, Dichter und Übersetzer.

Leben

Im Jahr 1901 verlor Muirs Vater seine Farm auf den Orkney-Inseln, daher übersiedelte die Familie nach Glasgow. 1919 heiratete er Willa Anderson und die beiden zogen nach London. Gemeinsam übersetzten sie später Werke von Franz Kafka[1], Lion Feuchtwanger und Hermann Broch[2] ins Englische.

In seinen Werken The Story and the Fable und An Autobiography schrieb er seine eigene Lebensgeschichte. Muir führte ein vergleichsweise aktives und kosmopolitisches Leben. Er übte mehrere Berufe aus, darunter Arbeiter, Journalist, Rezensent, Redakteur, Übersetzer, Verwalter und Lehrer.

Meist musste entweder Muir selbst oder seine Frau Willa arbeiten, um die finanziellen Mittel und die Freizeit zu sichern, die es ihm ermöglichten, seine künstlerischen Ambitionen zu verwirklichen. Sein Stil ist als „Superrealismus“ bezeichnet worden.[3]
