Bev Kelly

Bev Kelly, auch Beverly Kelly (* 18. Juni 1934 in Rittman, eigentlich Beverly Wolfe Kelly) ist eine US-amerikanische Jazz- und Popsängerin.

Leben und Wirken

Kelly erhielt als Kind klassischen Klavierunterricht. Mit 14 Jahren begann sie in der High School eine klassische Gesangsausbildung, die sie am Cincinnati-Konservatorium fortsetzte.

Kelly wirkte während des Studiums in Cincinnati ein Jahr als Sängerin bei Teddy Raymond. Dem Fernsehpublikum wurde sie Mitte der 1950er Jahre durch ihre Auftritte in der Tonight Show bekannt, wo die Pianistin Pat Moran sie begleitete; 1958 erschien ihr Debütalbum Beverly Kelly Sings With the Pat Moran Trio.[1] Riverside Records veröffentlichte 1959 ihr Album Love Locked Out, gefolgt von Bev Kelly in Person (1960). Ebenso wie schon 1958 wurde sie auch 1960 im Jazz Poll der Zeitschrift Down Beat nominiert, von 1960 bis 1968 auch im Jazz Poll des Magazins Playboy.[1]

1961 zog sich Kelly für einige Jahre aus der Öffentlichkeit zurück, um sich ihrer Familie zu widmen. Sie betätigte sich unter anderem als Gesangslehrerin. Zu ihren Schülern gehört der australische Musiker und Sänger Rick Springfield.[1]

Kelly kehrte 1966 wieder in die Clubs zurück, wo sie mit Frank Rosolino und Hampton Hawes auftrat. 1972 nahm sie in London drei von George Korngold produzierte Alben für Reader’s Digest auf.[1] 1977 sang sie das Titellied der Kriminalkomödie Die Katze kennt den Mörder. 1978 investierte sie in den Jazzclub Jazz Safari im kalifornischen Long Beach, der damals dem Pianisten Al Williams gehörte. Dort trat sie auch auf und machte Aufnahmen (die später in Japan erschienen). 1981 legte sie die LP You Go to My Head vor, auf der sie Bob Graf mit seinem Quartett begleitete.

Nachdem Kelly 1984 in Psychologie promoviert hatte, arbeitete sie als Psychotherapeutin. Nur noch wenige Male kehrte sie auf die Bühne zurück, nahm aber 2002 ihr Album Portrait of Nine Dreams auf, das auf autobiographischen Gedichten aufbaute.
